CRETAGOLD Foods was founded in 2003 by George and Stavros. George was born in western Crete in 1908 and Stavros was born in central Crete in 1942. They both left Crete when they were young men and immigrated to the U.S. Today, they are prominent businessmen and actively involved in programs that promote Crete’s products and culture.
George and Stavros visit their homeland often to see friends and relatives and to enjoy the simple life and healthy, wholesome cuisine that Crete is renowned for. Their relatives still lead the traditional village life in Crete – making enough olive oil, wine, cheese and honey, among many other items on the average Cretan menu, for their family and friends to enjoy throughout the year.
These basic staples have been produced in Crete since the Minoan era, 2500 years B.C.. The skills needed for these everyday tasks have been devotedly passed to each new generation. People take great pride in producing the highest quality of food – and there’s always a little unofficial competition with their neighbors. In this pocket of the world, there are few losers in the competition. All food produced with skill, care, and love is exceptional.
Because the olive oil produced in their area has so much more body, flavor, and character than the olive oils they could find here in the States, George and Stavros decided to bottle their liquid gold and share it with like-minded food lovers who consider quality to be their top priority.
Doctors around the world have recommended the Cretan diet and lifestyle to patients because it is a proven solution in the prevention of our world’s increasing rates of diseases that could easily be remedied by a simple change in our diet and exercise habits. One key factor is the high consumption of olive oil as opposed to animal fats or chemically refined cooking oils. To use robust, flavorful olive oil from Crete is not a grim substitute for other fats. In fact, it might surprise you that good olive oil is more versatile for many meals you prepare. These facts just make it easier for George, Stavros, and the farmers they work with in Crete, to share their knowledge about healthy, life-long dining habits, and their delectable, high-quality products with you.
George starts his day with two slices of whole wheat toast drizzled with olive oil then leaves for his office before 5:00 A.M. At 99 years of age, he epitomizes the health benefits of the Cretan diet – a message he aims to convey to us. You must be active and eat well to stay well!
